1. The fencing and gate hardware industry has traditionally been male-dominated. Can you share your journey of how you entered this field and what inspired you to pursue a career in it?
My Journey into the Male-Dominated Fencing Industry as a Single Mom:
I never imagined that I’d end up in the fencing industry, especially considering how male-dominated it was when I first entered. But life has a way of pushing you down unexpected paths, and my journey is a testament to resilience and determination.
As a single mom, I was faced with the reality of needing to provide for my family. I needed something stable that could support my children and offer me the flexibility to balance being a mother. I was looking for a field where my work ethic, ability to problem-solve, and hands-on skills could make a difference.
One day, I came across a job opening for a position at Campanella Fence. The industry was a far cry from anything I had considered before, but the more I researched, the more I realized how important it was. Fencing wasn’t just about aesthetics—it provided security and privacy for families, which resonated with me as a mother. The idea that I could work in a field that helped people feel safe and secure gave me a sense of purpose.
When I first started, I knew there would be challenges. But I didn’t let that deter me. I leaned into my strengths—communication, multitasking, and problem-solving—and worked hard to learn as much as I could. I was building my own future and setting an example for my girls that anything was possible if you worked hard enough.
Over time, I earned the respect of my colleagues by demonstrating my dedication, knowledge, and ability to get things done, even in tough situations. My hands-on experience, combined with my drive to excel, led me to the role of Operations Manager. Now, I oversee daily operations, ensure we meet deadlines, and help make strategic decisions that keep the company running smoothly. It’s been an empowering journey, proving that with perseverance, anything is achievable.
Being a single mom in this industry has shaped me into the leader I am today. I’m not just managing operations—I’m managing a balance between family, work, and personal growth. My success in the fencing industry is a reminder that no matter your circumstances, you can break into and thrive in fields you never thought possible.
2. Women bring unique perspectives and strengths to every industry. In what ways do you think women contribute to innovation, customer relationships, or business growth in the fencing industry?
Empathy and communication: Women in customer-facing roles, from sales to support, often excel in empathetic communication and building strong relationships with clients. Our approach to listening and understanding customer needs can help businesses retain loyal clients and attract new ones.
Entrepreneurship: More women are starting their own businesses in the fencing industry, whether as independent contractors, business owners, or as part of larger enterprises.
3. Have you faced any specific challenges or biases as a woman in the fencing and gate hardware industry? How did you navigate those obstacles, and what advice would you give other women aspiring to enter this field?
Yes, I have, and I will say that you just have to stay strong and true to your word of what you promise. Consistency is everything, and as long as you are consistent and persistent, you will reach your goal. My advice is to never give up!!
4. How do you see the role of women evolving in the fencing industry? What opportunities do you believe exist for more women to get involved, and how can the industry become more inclusive?
I see that the role of women in the fencing industry is evolving in a positive and dynamic way, and there are numerous opportunities for growth, involvement, and greater inclusivity.
Increased Representation in Roles: As more women gain experience and education in areas like engineering, business management, and operations, we will likely see an increase in female executives and business owners in the fencing industry. More women will take on leadership positions, influencing decision-making processes and driving innovation from the top.
Training and Education.
Mentorship Programs: Establishing mentorship programs that connect experienced women in the industry with younger women or newcomers will help foster talent. They can focus on technical training, career development, and leadership skills.
As women continue to break down barriers, the fencing industry will likely become a more inclusive and diverse space. With the right support systems, education, and mentorship, women can significantly influence the industry’s future through innovation, leadership, and unique perspectives. By promoting a more inclusive culture, addressing gender bias, and opening up new opportunities for involvement, the fencing industry can create a more dynamic and forward-thinking workforce.
5.- What advice would you give young women or professionals considering a career in the gate hardware and fencing industry? Have any key skills, mindsets, or networks helped you succeed?
I would let the women know that there is a role for them in this industry, whether it is in the field, behind the scenes in operations, Business management, sales, or even developing new technology to help our systems work better. I will say that the education of the American Fencing Association has opened my eyes to how huge and amazing this industry is. It has taught me how to grow in my position as an operations manager and in other volunteer opportunities that I would have never imagined.
